Spring into wellbeing: How to refresh your mental health routine

As the days get longer and the flowers start to bloom, spring offers the perfect opportunity to refresh not just your wardrobe or home, but your mental health routine as well. The changing seasons can have a profound impact on our wellbeing, and this time of year, when nature comes back to life, can help rejuvenate your mind and body. Here are some simple strategies to embrace the season and improve your mental health.

1. Reconnect with nature

After months of winter, it’s easy to feel disconnected from the outdoors. Spring is the ideal time to get outside and reconnect with nature. Studies have shown that spending time in natural surroundings can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall wellbeing. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a weekend hike, or simply spending time in your garden, take advantage of the warmer weather to step outside and soak up some fresh air and sunshine.

Tip: If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try a “mindful walk” in nature. Focus on the sights, sounds, and smells around you, allowing your mind to clear as you walk.

2. Spring clean your mindset

Spring cleaning isn’t just for your home; it’s also a great opportunity to “clean up” your mental space. It’s common for clutter, both physical and mental, to build up over time. Spring is a perfect moment to declutter your environment and your mind. Start by identifying the negative thought patterns, unhelpful habits, or work-related stressors that may be holding you back.

Tip: Make a list of what’s been weighing on your mind and take action where you can. Are there any small changes you can make to improve your daily routine? Perhaps it’s setting clearer boundaries at work or focusing on one thing at a time rather than multitasking.

3. Create a new self-care routine

Self-care is a vital part of maintaining mental health, but it’s easy to fall into a routine that feels stale or ineffective. Spring is the ideal time to shake things up and try something new. Explore activities that leave you feeling energised and fulfilled—whether it’s a new hobby, physical activity, or relaxation technique.

Tip:  Consider adding an outdoor activity like yoga or meditation in a park to your routine. The connection with nature combined with mindful movement can do wonders for your mental health. Or try journaling about the things you’re grateful for to shift your mindset to a more positive outlook.

4. Focus on mindful eating and hydration

The change of season often brings an abundance of fresh, seasonal produce. Taking advantage of this can be a simple yet powerful way to boost your mental and physical wellbeing. Foods rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and healthy fats can enhance brain function and mood. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water, as dehydration can lead to irritability and fatigue.

Tip: Try creating a colourful spring salad filled with leafy greens, fruits, and nuts. Fresh ingredients can help nourish your body and mind, while focusing on eating whole, unprocessed foods can provide energy and clarity.

5. Embrace new goals and positivity

Spring is all about renewal, and it’s the perfect time to set new goals or revisit old ones. Whether it's taking up a new project at work, learning a new skill, or simply spending more time with loved ones, establishing clear, achievable goals can give you a sense of purpose and motivation. It’s also important to practise positive self-talk and challenge any negative beliefs that may be limiting you.

Tip: Start small by setting one or two achievable goals this season and celebrate each milestone along the way. Positive reinforcement can help build confidence and mental resilience.

6. Reach out for support when needed

Spring is often a time when people feel more energised and optimistic, but it’s also important to recognise when you might need help. If you find that seasonal changes or work-related stress are impacting your mental health, don’t hesitate to reach out for support. Whether it's talking to a friend, family member, or a professional, having someone to share your thoughts and concerns with can make all the difference.

Whether it’s reconnecting with nature, decluttering your mind, or focusing on self-care, there are plenty of ways to refresh your mental health routine this spring. Remember, it’s okay to take small steps, and you don’t have to do it alone. Reach out for support when needed and enjoy the benefits of a refreshed mindset this season!
